Working together to create positive change can be very fulfilling. We take a step back to show you how the 2nd Chance House project came to be and how the Fine Homebuilding team is proudly and tirelessly doing their part to make it a success.
The 2nd Chance House team is busy racing against time to finish renovating a condemned house for a deserving local family. Each team member has been working on their assigned projects, ensuring that every part of the house is in perfect condition.
So, how did it all start, and how is it going?
Ricky Smith, founder of Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere, has been updating us on the progress of the 2nd Chance House. Ricky discusses how the project emerged, the tireless efforts of Fine Homebuilding pros who are renovating the house, and offers a glimpse of the family that will be getting the house.
According to Armand, anyone can volunteer and work on Habitat projects by contacting their local affiliate. Loctite and Habitat for Humanity partnered on this house and thus began the 2nd Chance House project in 2024.
For Loctite, joining this project was a no-brainer. The brand is committed to using sustainable techniques and products and encouraging others to renovate and give items a 2nd Chance. Loctite wanted to bring their professional home builders and contractors to the work site and use high-quality products to make the house livable and more sustainable.
Bringing a condemned house back to life can be a daunting task. However, the highly capable 2nd Chance House team is more than up for it. To bring this house back to its best condition and ready for the family that will be getting it, Loctite and Habitat brought together a varied and capable team that is made up of members from:
- Habitat for Humanity
- Loctite
- DIY Experts
- Fine Homebuilding pros
Each team member has a specific role in this renovation project. They are all excited to play a part in bringing this discarded house back to life and helping a deserving family realize their dream of owning a home. Throughout the project, each expert will use their skills and creativity to create a comfortable space that the new family will love and enjoy.
Tyler Grace, from TRG Home Concepts, is one of the Fine Homebuilding pros working on this project. This is the first time this home remodeling contractor has worked with Habitat for Humanity, and he can’t wait to contribute to the project and make his mark!
Known for his keen eye for fine homes, Tyler will work on making the house more energy-efficient. Tyler believes a remodeling job shouldn’t just make a house look better. He says a good renovation project must address all problems hidden under the walls.
According to him, addressing all hidden insulation issues comes with a variety of benefits, including:
- Creating energy savings by reducing energy consumption
- Maintaining a comfortable indoor environment
- Ensuring a safe and healthy living space
To demonstrate how he plans to achieve his project goals, Tyler and John D discuss the process of air sealing one of the newly installed windows. Tyler starts by pointing out common air leakage points around the window perimeter.
Tyler understands the importance of properly air-sealing gaps and cracks around windows and other parts of the house. He follows a straightforward process to ensure that all gaps and cracks along the perimeter of the window are properly sealed. He plans to air-seal the gaps around the window corners before moving to the spaces between the window opening and the frame.
The right expanding foam should air-seal all gaps without applying undue pressure on the window frame. This ensures the window opens and closes without getting stuck. Tyler uses Loctite Tite Foam Window & Door to achieve the desired outcome.
Tyler applies the expanding foam, demonstrating his knowledge and skills in air-sealing windows.
Tyler takes this opportunity to share his knowledge about air sealing and insulating gaps and cracks around houses under renovation. He hopes the project will be completed without a hitch and the new homeowners will be pleased with the renovation team's work to bring this hundred-year-old house back to its best condition.
As a house remodeling expert, he also hopes that the knowledge he shares about the best materials and products will be useful in future projects.
No one is more excited about this project than the family who will be living in this house. According to Armand, these houses are usually allocated to single-parent families with a couple of young children. However, Ricky has some exciting news — Habitat has already identified the family that will get this house! During the next project update, the family will see and tour their new home!
The 2nd Chance House project will help a deserving family realize their homeownership dream. Everyone involved, including all team members and the surrounding community, is excited to be part of this project. As such, this Habitat for Humanity and Loctite project is more than a simple house renovation.
