Transforming an old house into a modern masterpiece can be quite satisfying. Our behind-the-scenes coverage of the 2nd Chance House project will show you how to do it using simple and sustainable techniques.
Chris & Yvonne Johnson will lead an exceptional group of DIYers conducting the 2nd Chance House project. This is a partnership between Loctite and Habitat for Humanity. It involves renovating a condemned 100-year-old home in Cleveland, Ohio.
As husband and wife, Chris and Yvonne offer one-of-a-kind design and renovation services. They pride themselves on providing a more personalized approach to design and construction. In addition to offering old home renovation services, the team builds and restores furniture.
The couple believes in good karma, which is reflected in their company’s name, Reclaimed Karma. They believe that what goes around comes around and they always strive to do what is right. This belief motivated them to join the 2nd Chance House project, which aims to renovate a rundown house for a deserving family using sustainable means.
This power couple will provide detailed updates on the progress of the 2nd Chance House project. They will also peek under the hood to show everyone how Loctite promotes sustainability through upcycling and the use of eco-friendly products at job sites.
This article takes a deeper look at what happened on the first day of this epic house transformation project. Chris and Yvonne introduce other members of the renovation team, layout project goals, and break down the inner workings of demo day.
After buying their first house, Chris and Yvonne decided to upgrade it with the help of a contractor. However, this “professional” left them high and dry. The husband-and-wife team had to take matters into their own hands and handle most of the renovation work themselves.
This horrible experience helped the couple appreciate the importance of working with a team of skilled and reliable Pros. For the 2nd Chance House project, Chris and Yvonne will be part of a star-studded team of highly rated home renovation influencers drawn from all over the country. They include:
- Sydney Lorence. This passionate DIYer is a stay-at-home mom. When she is not looking after her young kids, she spends her time updating various elements of her amazing 1920s farmhouse. Sydney loves old homes and is excited to be part of the team renovating the century-old 2nd Chance House. She definitely has what it takes to breathe new life into this old house.
- Clayton Juarez. In addition to being a father of two, Clayton is a seasoned builder with exceptional woodworking and DIY skills. He is a third-generation builder and has worked on a variety of home renovation projects.
- Jessie Ecker. This passionate DIYer has spent a good chunk of her time updating her old 1970s home into a modern showstopper. Jessie is always looking to improve her skills and is currently studying to be a general contractor. She loves home transformation projects and is big on upcycling job site waste into eye-catching pieces of art.
Each DIY expert will be able to contribute to Loctite’s exciting home renovation project in their own unique way.
This Loctite project is all about giving a Second Chance to a condemned house, the deserving family that will live there, and the surrounding community. To succeed, the team will have to achieve several important goals:
- Using sustainable techniques. Loctite is committed to sustainability. Every part of this project will be done using simple and sustainable techniques. Part of the reason we chose to save this house is to prevent more waste from making its way to landfills. On top of this, the team will use upcycling to minimize job site waste. They will also be using Loctite’s high-quality, eco-friendly products to complete each of their projects.
- Utilizing existing elements. As a structure built over a century ago, the Loctite 2nd Chance House is full of history. It is also littered with charming design elements that give it a unique look and feel. As Chris Johnson puts it, “The Loctite 2nd Chance home is the epitome of good bones.” The team of DIYers is tasked with incorporating these elements into their home renovation ideas. Our hosts are excited to see what each member comes up with over the course of the project!
- Overcoming constraints. Like any other house transformation project, the team must overcome time and budgetary constraints. However, given their experience and skills, Chris believes that everyone is up for the challenge.
The team of seasoned DIYers decided to kick off demo day after taking a tour of the house. They took this opportunity to clear the slate and create a foundation for the work ahead.
Demolition day was the team’s first visit to the 2nd Chance House. On this busy day, the team:
- Knocked down several walls within the house
- Demolished the porch
- Stripped down the bathroom
Each team member also identified their projects and explored their plans for the upcoming home transformation project.
A house renovation project has many moving parts. Chris and Yvonne will take us through every step of the 2nd Chance House transformation.
