Ready to craft with felt? We’ve got two top adhesives for gluing felt, and complete instructions on how to use them.
Felt is a common craft fabric that has a variety of uses beyond children’s crafts. It is used to line card tables or to make clothing and accessories like slippers, boot linings, cell phone cases, bags and more.
Standard super glues bleed through fabric and dry hard, leaving your felt stiff and full of glue stains. When deciding on a felt adhesive, it’s important to select a glue that won’t run or bleed through the fabric. The best adhesives for gluing felt together are spray adhesives and fabric glue. Here’s an overview of the two best choices.
The best way to glue large pieces of felt is by using Loctite Spray Adhesive Multi-Purpose. This compatible spray adhesive carries the perfect viscosity for felt and won’t bleed through fabric, even with multiple layers applied. It has an exceptional bonding strength, doesn’t foam when sprayed, and dries clear.
If you’re gluing smaller areas, reach for a fabric glue like Loctite Vinyl, Fabric and Plastic. This multi-functional adhesive adheres to a variety of materials, making it more usable for various crafting projects. It dries clear, is waterproof, and has a flexible bond that bends and moves with the fabric.
Here’s how to glue felt to felt using spray adhesive:
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Shake the can 10-12 times before spraying.
- Turn the spray tip so the black dot is aligned with the nozzle.
- Holding the can vertically and roughly 8-10 inches (20-25cm) from the surface, apply a light even coat onto the felt.
- Place the felt into place and smooth the surface with your hand. To reposition, remove and peel from the corner.
Multiple coats will increase the bond strength if needed. For a strong bond, apply a medium coat to both surfaces, allow the adhesive to dry for 1-10 minutes, then bond materials. - Clean up the adhesive can by flipping it right side up and spraying for 2 seconds or until the spray is free of adhesive. Clean the nozzle with turpentine or mineral spirits to prevent clogging.
Here’s how to glue felt together with Loctite Vinyl, Fabric and Plastic.
For wet bonding:
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Open the adhesive by piercing the seal with the reverse end of the cap.
- Apply a thin even amount to both surfaces and press together.
- Hold felt together until set. The fabric can be repositioned while the adhesive is still wet.
For contact bonding:
- Apply evenly to both surfaces.
- Let dry for 10-30 minutes or until adhesive is dry to the touch.
- For porous surfaces like felt, apply a second coat and allow it to dry.
- Assemble parts within 30 minutes.
