Crafting felt fabric: An easy first-time project

If you are looking for ideas on how to craft with felt, then search no more. We have the perfect challenge for a first-time DIY felt craft. We will call this one “The Perfect Snowy Day Project.” You’ll need:

  1. A variety of pieces of felt: green, yellow, red, white, blue, brown, and black are good colors to start with.
  2. A piece of cardboard. The back of a cereal box will do.
  3. Scissors
  4. Fabric glue

How to do it:

  1. Cut the cardboard into a rectangle, 12” by 16”.
  2. Cut a piece of blue felt to represent the sky that fits along the top ( 16”) edge of cardboard and that angles down to the bottom right corner. Glue it to the cardboard.
  3. Now cut a piece of white felt to fill in everything that isn't blue; this will represent the snowy hill. Glue it to the cardboard.
  4. Cut out and glue a toboggan shape and a child riding it, using whatever colors appeal to you. Add accent colors like mitts, a scarf, and a hat, and glue them onto the child shape.
  5. Cut out a green pine tree and glue it somewhere on the snowy hill.
  6. Add a sun and birds in the sky and you have the makings of a pretty winter scene.

Know your materials for crafts with felt

So, if you want to give crafting felt fabric a try, here are some details about the materials you’ll be using.

The felt can be polyester, acrylic, rayon, or a blend, and it comes in a variety of colors. Felt is manmade and 100% synthetic. You can generally find it anywhere craft materials are sold. It’s available by the yard or pre-cut 9” by 12” sheets. It is also available with self-adhesive backings as well as glitter and stiffeners for a variety of projects.

The other key item is the adhesive. Without the right glue, your crafts with felt sheets will fall apart. We recommend Loctite Stik’n Seal Extreme Conditions. It is a versatile, heat-resistant adhesive that bonds, seals, and repairs almost all materials. It has excellent adhesion and high initial grab that cures quickly. It also has a low odor, so it’s easy on the nose.
